the claim that's everywhere right now

if you've been anywhere near health or wellness content in the last year, you've probably seen a version of this headline: "sauna eliminates microplastics by 86%."

it sounds incredible. it's being shared as fact across social media, wellness newsletters, and product marketing. and it traces back to a single source: Bryan Johnson, the tech entrepreneur and self-described biohacker who spends roughly $2 million per year on longevity protocols.

in October 2025, Johnson posted that the concentration of microplastics in his ejaculate dropped from 165 particles per milliliter to 20 particles per milliliter over approximately eight months. he reported a nearly identical drop in his blood. the protocol he credited: daily 20-minute sessions in a dry sauna at approximately 93°C (200°F), combined with dietary changes, reverse osmosis water filtration, and eliminating plastic cutting boards, non-stick cookware, and plastic food containers.


it's a genuinely fascinating self-experiment from someone with the resources and commitment to run detailed bloodwork before and after. and the results are striking.

but it's one person.

why that's not proof yet

Johnson's result is an n=1 self-tracked observation. it has no control group, no blinding, no peer review, and no way to isolate the sauna as the causal variable from the multiple other interventions he implemented simultaneously (dietary changes, water filtration, plastic elimination from his kitchen and environment).

no controlled human study has tested whether sauna use reduces microplastic levels in blood or semen. as multiple medical experts have pointed out since the claim went viral, there is a critical distinction between microplastics (solid polymer particles lodged in tissue) and the chemical additives associated with plastics (like BPA and phthalates, which are water-soluble molecules that move through biological fluids). the body's mechanisms for clearing each are fundamentally different.

dr. Waqqas Jalil, a board-trained plastic surgeon, noted that the body's primary filtration systems are the liver and kidneys, which process and eliminate waste via urine and bile rather than sweat. he stated that the best medical approach to microplastics remains limiting contact with them. scientists at ZME Science went further, observing that there is no known biological mechanism by which a solid particle of plastic could be transported from tissue into a sweat gland and pushed out through a pore.

anyone repeating "86%" as established fact is running ahead of the evidence. it's a fascinating starting point, not proven science. and conflating it with the peer-reviewed research on sweating does a disservice to the actual studies that have been published, which tell a quieter, more nuanced, and more interesting story.

what the real research does show

here's where it gets genuinely compelling. because while the microplastic claim is unproven, the peer-reviewed research on what sweat actually carries out of your body is surprisingly strong, and most people have never seen it.

80% of people had a hormone-disrupting chemical in their sweat that their blood test never caught

BPA (bisphenol A) is an endocrine disruptor found in polycarbonate plastics, food can linings, thermal receipt paper, and hundreds of consumer products. it mimics estrogen in the body and is linked to hormonal and metabolic effects. Health Canada classifies BPA as toxic and has banned it from baby bottles and infant formula packaging. most people carry a background level of it without knowing.

in 2012, Genuis and colleagues published a study in the Journal of Environmental and Public Health that tested blood, urine, and sweat from 20 participants for BPA. the findings were significant:

BPA was detected in the sweat of 16 out of 20 participants (80%). in some participants, BPA appeared in sweat even when blood and urine tests came back clean. this means that standard clinical testing (blood draws and urinalysis) can underestimate how much of this chemical your body is actually holding. sweat reached what those tests missed.

the researchers concluded that sweat analysis may be a useful additional tool for biomonitoring of certain bioaccumulated compounds, and that induced sweating appears to facilitate the excretion of BPA from tissue stores that are not efficiently cleared through renal or hepatic pathways.

this is a peer-reviewed study, published in an indexed journal, with a defined methodology and measurable results. it's not a social media post. it's science.

and it's not just BPA

a companion study by the same research group (Genuis et al., 2012, The Scientific World Journal) examined phthalate excretion across blood, urine, and sweat. phthalates are plasticizers used to make plastics flexible. they're found in food packaging, personal care products, vinyl flooring, medical devices, and children's toys. like BPA, they're classified as endocrine disruptors.

the results: MEHP (mono-2-ethylhexyl phthalate), a primary metabolite of DEHP, averaged more than twice as high in sweat as in urine. several phthalate parent compounds appeared in sweat but not in blood serum, suggesting that certain phthalates bioaccumulate in tissue and are only mobilized and eliminated through perspiration.

both BPA and phthalates are classified as endocrine disruptors by Health Canada and the European Chemicals Agency. they interfere with hormone signaling at extremely low concentrations. the fact that sweat provides a measurable elimination pathway for compounds the body has no other efficient way to clear gives sweating a functional role that goes beyond thermoregulation.

heavy metals leave through sweat too

a systematic review published in the Journal of Environmental and Public Health (Sears et al., 2012) analyzed 24 studies on the excretion of arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury in human sweat. the findings:

in individuals with higher toxic exposure or body burden, sweat concentrations of these metals generally exceeded those found in blood plasma or urine. dermal excretion could match or surpass urinary daily output for certain metals. cadmium was consistently more concentrated in sweat than in blood plasma. arsenic excretion through sweat was severalfold higher in exposed individuals compared to unexposed controls. and in one case report, mercury levels normalized after repeated sauna sessions.

the researchers' conclusion was direct: sweating deserves consideration for toxic element detoxification.

the foundational study behind this body of work is the Blood, Urine, and Sweat (BUS) Study (Genuis et al., 2011, Archives of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology), which monitored toxic element levels across all three body fluids in 20 participants. some toxic elements were preferentially concentrated in sweat relative to blood. some participants showed detectable toxicant levels in sweat but not in blood or urine, suggesting sweat accesses tissue-level stores that the kidneys and liver aren't efficiently clearing.

the honest takeaway

sauna probably will not flush 86% of microplastics from your blood. that claim is not proven, and the biological mechanism for sweating out solid polymer particles is questionable at best. anyone telling you otherwise is selling something or hasn't read the primary source.

but the peer-reviewed research is real that sweating helps your body clear certain plastic-related chemicals that disrupt hormones. BPA. phthalates. MEHP. compounds that mimic estrogen, interfere with reproductive health, and accumulate in tissue faster than the liver and kidneys can clear them. sweat carries out compounds that standard blood and urine testing misses entirely.

that's a smaller claim. it's also actually backed by science. and for most people, it's the more relevant one.

what this means for how you use a sauna

the research points to a few practical variables.

consistency matters more than intensity. the BPA and phthalate studies measured excretion during induced sweating sessions. the systematic review on heavy metals noted that repeated sauna sessions produced progressive clearance. a single session produces measurable excretion. months of regular use produce measurable reduction in body burden. 3-5 sessions per week is the range most consistent with the literature.

deep, sustained sweating is the mechanism. casual perspiration during daily activity doesn't produce the sweat volume needed for meaningful excretion. exercise produces more, but is limited by session length and physical capacity. sauna creates sustained, deep sweating for 15-20 minutes without physical exertion, and can be done daily regardless of training schedule.

infrared vs traditional both work. both sauna types raise core temperature and induce sweating. infrared saunas (45-65°C) penetrate 1-2 inches into tissue, raising core temperature more gradually and potentially mobilizing fat-soluble compounds stored deeper in adipose tissue. traditional dry saunas (80-100°C) produce more intense sweating through higher ambient air temperature. the BUS studies didn't differentiate between heat sources, suggesting the sweating itself is the pathway regardless of how the heat is delivered.
